Coming of Age for the Millennial Workforce. WTF?

Sounds kind of heavy right? Well it isn’t. it just means members of the millennial generation, the largest generation since the Baby Boomers, have recently begun trickling into the professional workplace and will continue to do so for years to come. As these former students transition to active members of corporate America, many changes will be required of companies to recruit and retain these highly-skilled, tech-savvy workers slated to replace the retiring Baby Boomers. The goal of Millennial’s At Work will be to define members of this generation including their role in the workplace, to discuss what “experts” are saying about us and what that means to our employers and more importantly to ourselves, and talk about personal experiences as working millennial’s.

I dont believe many of our parents entered into their professions as we have been able…as a well educated and technically advanced generation. I am, however, not taking from this generation, they are the originators of the technology our generation is innovating. I believe this is inherent to the infastructure of society, one generation must, as a whole, make the successors desire more for thier lives then the predecessors could provide. In this, we develop new industy standards for companies to recruit and retain these highly-skilled, tech-savvy workers.
I believe the millennials are the most highly educated workforce in history, no doubt our fauna will take this trone. When pillaging for thier first jobs they will want more then their fathers received, just as we did when we were fledglings. And, they will get it.

Here are some constants you need to keep in mind: 1) Spouse, 2) Kids, 3) Recessions. When these things happen to you (at least the third is a guarantee), your perceptions will change greatly.

I’m sure the Hippies never worried about 401k(s) or Insurance. What were they into? Oh, I don’t know.. music, doing their own thing, not being supressed by the man… starting to sound familiar. Irrespective of generational specifics, growing older has a similar impact on everyone.

Hold on to your thoughts, archive them, then read them when your 60. Trust me, you’ll find certain stings of thought as naive. But it’s ok. This is one common thread for everyone.

Let me ask you this, when your first child is born with a severe disability, how important are the wikis, tabs, MP3s and artificial intelligence at that point?

True independent thinkers work to strip away the generalizations published by sociologists out to make a buck or coin a term.
